This 1979 Volvo 242 has been registered in Washington since new and was parked in storage from 2001 to 2020 according to the seller, and it now shows 57k miles. Powered by a 2.1-liter inline-four paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, the car is finished in green over beige upholstery, and it is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, 14″ steel wheels, thin-whitewall tires, anodized bumpers, and Volvo-branded mud flaps. The seller acquired the car in May 2022, and subsequent work included paint corrections and replacing the hood, side mirrors, and a taillight assembly as well as the catalytic converter, in-tank fuel pump, fuel pump relay, auxiliary air valve, temperature gauge voltage regulator, heater control valve, and shifter bushings. This 242 coupe is offered at no reserve with service records, sales documents, the removed hood and other spare parts, and a Washington state title in the seller’s name.
The seller reports the car was finished in Lexington Green (140) from the factory, and a replacement hood was refinished and installed after they acquired the car. Additional work during current ownership included paint correction around the body, rust repairs under the rear bumper trim, and replacing the side mirrors, a taillight assembly, and a reverse-light cover. Wear on the left C-pillar trim is noted along with areas of corrosion on the trunk floor, right door, and decklid, which has a ding in it, and a leaking windshield is also listed in paperwork that accompanies the vehicle.
Steel 14″ wheels wear beauty rings, Volvo hubcaps, and 185/70 Uniroyal Tiger Paw thin-whitewall tires. The brake master cylinder, brake booster, and all four calipers, pads, and rotors were replaced in March 2020.
The cabin features seats trimmed in beige cloth, a color-coordinated headliner and door panels, and a black dashboard housing an analog clock and a lockable glovebox with a mirror. The shifter bushings and heater control valve were replaced in November 2022. The radio has been removed, the air conditioning does not work, and the vinyl on the side of the left-rear seat is cracked.
The four-spoke steering wheel frames a 130-mph speedometer and a combination gauge showing fuel level and engine temperature. The six-digit odometer shows 57k miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the seller.
The 2.1-liter inline-four was rated at 106 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. The oil was changed and the following items were replaced or installed in 2022:
- Auxiliary air valve
- Light-pressure in-tank fuel pump
- Fuel pump relay
- Distributor cap & rotor
- Ignition wires & spark plugs
- Coolant temperature gauge voltage regulator
