This 1972 Saab 96 is finished in red over two-tone cloth and vinyl upholstery and is powered by a 1.7-liter V4 mated to a column-shifted four-speed manual transaxle with a freewheel clutch. The engine is said to have been fitted with an Isky F-55 camshaft under previous ownership along with a custom crankshaft, forged pistons, a high-flow oil pump, a Bosch ignition system, and twin Weber DCOE carburetors. The car features a front spoiler, Saab-branded rear mudflaps, Bilstein shocks, 15″ Ronal wheels, Saab 900 front bucket seats, a GaugePilot rally computer, and a push-button AM/FM radio. Service following the seller’s April 2017 acquisition included replacing the valve cover and timing cover gaskets as well as the fuel pump, fuel sender, and clutch primary cylinders. This Saab 96 is now offered with partial service records, a Rhode Island registration document, and a bill of sale.

The car was finished from the factory in Amber Yellow (Y8) and was repainted in Porsche Guards Red under prior ownership, according to the seller. Bosch headlights and driving lamps are fitted up front, while additional exterior details include a front spoiler, pop-out rear quarter windows, Saab-branded rear mudflaps, and black-finished bumpers with overriders.

Ronal 15″ alloy wheels wear 175/70 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires that were mounted in April 2017. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. Suspension components include Bilstein shocks as well as front and rear sway bars with urethane bushings. The rear axle retention strap is in need of replacement, per the seller.

The front bucket seats were reportedly sourced from a Saab 900 and wear tan cloth covers. The rear bench is trimmed in brown vinyl, and additional appointments include three-point front seatbelts, a heater, a fire extinguisher, and a Saab-branded push-button AM/FM radio. The seller notes that the dash-mounted VDO clock does not run when the ignition is off.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel wears red stitching and frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a column-mounted tachometer, a 100-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge. A multifunction GaugePilot rally computer as well as VDO oil pressure and temperature gauges are mounted below the dash. The five-digit odometer indicates 15k miles, approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1.7-liter V4 was reportedly rebuilt and blueprinted by Andy Bittenbinder with an Isky F-66 camshaft, a custom crankshaft, forged pistons, full-floating wrist pins, a steel balance shaft gear, a high-volume oil pump, and ported and polished cylinder heads. The engine is said to be installed with “Mexico” competition engine mounts, and additional equipment includes:

  • Black-finished induction silencers
  • Twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetors
  • Cross-flow intake manifold
  • Bosch ignition system
  • Setrab oil cooler and thermostat
  • Earl’s Performance fittings and oil lines
  • Saab 99 Turbo radiator with an electric fan

Service performed following the seller’s acquisition included replacing the battery, fuel pump, fuel sender, and valve cover and timing cover gaskets. The engine oil was changed in December 2021.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a column-shifted four-speed manual transaxle. A lightened flywheel, upgraded clutch assembly, 22mm reinforced countershaft, and 5.43:1 gears were reportedly installed under previous ownership. The primary and secondary clutch cylinders were replaced in 2017, and the gearbox fluid was changed in 2021. Additional equipment is said to include a Saab Sport & Rally performance exhaust system with twin polished outlets.

This car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on a bill of sale with a Rhode Island registration document.
