This 1986 Volvo 240 DL sedan was reportedly stored for nine years before it was acquired by the seller in September 2022 and recommissioned and registered for road use. Subsequent work included a timing belt service as well as replacing suspension, steering, and brake components along with several interior trim items. Finished in gray over tan cloth, the car is powered by a 2.3-liter inline-four mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, and it is equipped with 14″ wheels, heated front seats, air conditioning, and a JVC CD stereo. This 240 is now offered in Maryland with manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Virginia title.
The body was finished in Graphite metallic (177) at the factory, and the seller states that the car was repainted during previous ownership, and that paint correction was performed in preparation for the sale. Features include bright trim, composite headlights, mud guards, black bumpers with red accents, and a telescoping antenna that was replaced in 2022. Rust on the left rocker panel, a dent on the driver-side rear door, and scratches on the bumpers are noted, and the edges of the front spoiler are loose where they meet the bumper. The seller notes damage from lifting on the lower pinchwelds, and undercoating has been applied to areas of the underside.
Steel 14″ wheels wear replacement covers and 185/70 Bridgestone Insignia SE tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes, and the parking brake was adjusted in addition to a brake fluid flush in 2022. KYB rear shock absorbers were also installed within the past year.
The heated front bucket seats and the rear bench are upholstered in tan cloth. Appointments include air conditioning, a lockable glovebox, manual windows, and a JVC CD stereo with a remote control. The seller reports that the center console, shifter cover, door pockets, and B-pillar trim panels were replaced during current ownership. Wear is noted on the window cranks and door latches.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 137k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added by the seller, who notes the odometer was repaired after they acquired the car. Total mileage is unknown.
The fuel-injected 2.3L B230 inline-four was factory rated at 114 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque when new. Service during current ownership, which is documented in photos at the end of the gallery below, included cleaning the throttle body, adjusting the timing and valves, recharging the air-conditioning system, and replacing the following items:
- Timing belt, tensioner, tensioner spring, and lower cover
- Valve cover gasket
- Throttle body gasket
- Alternator
- Starter
- MAF sensor
- Power steering pump bushings
- Spark plugs and ignition wires
- Distributor cap, rotor, sensor, and seal
- Fuel pump check valve
- Fuel and air filters
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission that was serviced with a replacement filter, gasket, and kickdown cable in 2022. The front and rear shift linkage bushings were also replaced during current ownership, and the fluid in the rear axle was changed. A Virginia safety inspection sticker on the windshield indicates an expiration date of January 2024.
The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Rhode Island, Maryland, and Virginia beginning in September 2008, with a gap in entries between December 2014 and September 2022.
