This 1988 Volvo 240DL wagon is a 104k-mile example equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. The car was purchased new by a Chicago sports cars dealer who kept it for many years and used it during summers at his Minnesota vacation home. The seller acquired the car after it was featured on BaT back in February. Maintenance completed within the last 1000 miles includes a new timing belt, suspension and brake overhaul, exhaust work, and new engine seals. The car is sold with several sets of wheels, a clean Carfax report and a clean title.
Dark grey paint has an even shine over straight sheet metal. The car shows no evidence of having been hit or repainted according to the seller, who got consistent paint meter readings across the body. Slight flaking can be seen around a tailgate hinge, but drip rails look clean and exterior corrosion appears minimal.
Trim is straight including the chin spoiler, which has picked up some stone chips along the way. The stock grill features black-painted outer trim and is flanked by US-market single-piece headlights. Both taillights are cracked on their inner edges.
Volvo Hydra 16″ wheels wear newer rubber. A set of Blizzak winter tires mounted to factory 240 Turbo wheels are also included, as are a set of mounted stock wheels and another set of new unmounted summer tires.
Inside, blue vinyl seats are equipped with heaters up front. Door panels feature manual window cranks. As can be seen in the photos, there is some minor dash cracking.
A modern CD player with Bluetooth and USB connectivity is said to be the only non-original item. The air conditioning does not blow cold. Carpet is slightly faded where not protected by factory rubber mats. The headliner is tight with some scuffs on the upper edge of the loading area.
Out back, the cargo area includes a protective rubber mat and optional folding jump seat. The rear seat back folds flat. Aftermarket speakers have been mounted in the cargo bay.
The 2.4L B230F “redblock” inline four had its timing belt replaced by the previous owner, as were the crank, cam, and rear main seals. The exhaust has also been replaced from the exhaust manifold to outlet, including a new catalytic converter. Everything aft of the new cat is stainless steel.
The M47 5-speed manual received a new Sachs clutch from the previous owner. Within the last 1000 miles suspension work has included new control arms and bushings, front sway bar links and ball joints, and four KYB shocks. Fresh brake rotors and ceramic pads were installed on all four corners, and new parking brake shoes were mounted.
The clean Carfax shows records back to 2002 and the maintenance booklet is stamped with entries through October 1993.
Owner’s and shop manuals are included. Photos of many of the new replacement parts prior to install are viewable below.
