Running Project: 1973 Saab 96 V4

This 1973 Saab 96 is a V4 model that sounds to have recently been purchased from its elderly original owner, who had kept it in storage for over 30 years. The seller has it running, but adds that old Chevys are his specialty, and as such they’re unsure of how to get the clutch properly bled–as a result, the car will need to be towed. Rust is said to be limited to beneath the windshield, and the car does look to be in very serviceable condition. Sale includes all service records dating to new, and provided that cowl corrosion isn’t too out of hand, this one seems like it should be a pretty straightforward project. Find it here on Craigslist in Ventura, California for $3,400. Special thanks to BaT reader Mike R. for this submission.

The ad describes the car as very original, and paint does appear to be a factory color, with just the right amount of fade and character to suggest it may remain factory. There’s a fairly big dent on the right rear corner near the taillight, but otherwise bodywork looks to be largely straight with tight panel gaps, Trim is complete, and glass looks good all around too. A slightly scruffy look really works on teardrop Saabs, and we’d be happy to roll around in this one as-is once the above-mentioned cowl rust is taken care of.

The interior looks quite decent as well, though neither the dash top nor headliner can be seen in their entirety as photographed. Upholstery looks to be holding up well though, and excluding some neatly fitted aftermarket gauges to the left of the steering column, everything appears to be stock including the two-spoke wheel.

The interesting Ford sourced V4 has been made to run again following more than three decades in storage, but the seller admits that the car’s clutch hydraulics are over their head and as such they’ve decided to move on. It looks complete underhood, and parts availability is generally still pretty good.

Sale includes all service records dating to new, and the seller claims that this paperwork verifies 73k and change recorded miles as accurate.
