This 1965 Volvo PV544 was purchased by the previous owner in 1974 and located in Maryland before being won by the seller on BaT in August 2016. He originally bought the car to prepare it for the La Carrera Panamericana and Chihuahua Express, but has instead used it as a weekend cruiser. The upgraded B20 engine is paired to an M40 4-speed manual and was given new intake manifold gaskets, a new electric fuel pump, and the Weber 40 DCOE carburetors were rebuilt. A refurbished interior features a custom dash with gauges, carpets, headliner, and more. New tires have been installed and approximately 1k miles have been added since. The car is now being sold with records from the previous and current owners, a full set of workshop manuals, and a clean California title in the seller’s name. The car was repainted red at least once by the long term previous owner, and new floorboards were welded in back in 2002. The finish is said to show some chips and minor blemishes in various areas. The seller installed new rubber seals to the doors, hood, trunk lid, and windows, and pressure washed the aftermarket undercoating off of the undercarriage. He also painted the grille bezel gloss black and added small tubular bumpers with tow hooks. This PV544 was said to be featured in a 1978 Volvo commercial and has rally history with its last trophy awarded in 2000. The already existing American Racing 15×6″ Torque Thrust wheels were thoroughly cleaned by the seller and fitted with new BF Goodrich Advantage TA tires. The interior has been refurbished with a new wooden-rimmed steering wheel, a column-mounted chrome indicator switch, door panels, carpets, headliner, and a dash fitted with new white-faced gauges. A modern head unit is attached to the bottom of the dash and speakers can be seen in each kick panel. According to the previous owner the original B18 failed in 1986, and the current B20 engine was installed with a balanced short block, larger-valved 1974 fuel-injection “E” head, K camshaft, 40 DCOE Weber carburetors, and an MSD ignition system. A non-original M40 4-speed manual transmission that was installed in 1988 is paired to a Volvo 164 clutch and pressure plate. The motor was reported to have 25k miles of use when it was purchased by the seller in 2016, and he has serviced the car with a rebuild of the carburetors, new manifold gaskets, and a new electric fuel pump with regulators. The hood spring was removed and a prop rod was installed. Recent maintenance performed in November 2017 included an oil and filter change, and a check of the transmission and differential fluids. The Weber carbs are said to spit back a bit when the engine is cold. IPD sway bars are mounted front and rear, and the seller has replaced every bushing on the car with IPD polyurethane units. New Monroe OES Spectrum shocks, stiffer springs, wheel cylinders, kingpins, and master cylinder were also added. The brakes have been refreshed with resurfaced drums, new brake cylinders, and new shoes. Photos of the trunk show a spare steel wheel with a fresh tire and new jack. A full set of PV544 manuals are included along with receipts for parts and services performed under current ownership, as well as records from the previous owner dating back to 1974.
