Nicely Restored 1973 Volvo 1800ES

$

0

This 1973 Volvo 1800ES is the result of an apparently thorough rehabilitation performed by the seller, with an impressive list of recent mechanical and cosmetic work to back up its handsome appearance. Though another Volvo 1800-series holds a Guinness world record for mileage, this one shows 49k on the claimed-accurate odometer. Find it here on Craigslist in Fort Wayne, Indiana for $29,900. Special thanks to BaT reader George T. for this submission.

1973 VOLVO 1800ES FOR SALE

The original design for the P1800 is often attributed to Pietro Frua, though in fact a Swede penned the initial shape. Likewise, when revised into the 1800ES submissions by both Coggiola and Frua were passed over in favor of this one by Volvo’s chief designer. This example sports very nice Sea Green bodywork, and is fitted with a new windshield, windshield gasket and accompanying trim, a new hatch gasket and a repainted hood.

1973 VOLVO 1800ES FOR SALE

The bulk of the interior is impressive with new materials throughout. Upper and lower dash pads are new and covered in the correct material, and carpets are fresh as well. Dash wood grain has been replaced, and a stock radio is fitted in the fascia. The HVAC system sports new cabin ducting and a new heater valve, plus R134a converted A/C.

1973 VOLVO 1800ES FOR SALE

While the standard car’s rear seat was more useful for parcels than people, the ES offers slightly more head and shoulder room for rear seat occupants. Parcel-handling is also greatly improved, and this example’s blue carpeted hatch looks fantastic. The seller even went so far as to source correct luggage strap hardware, a nice touch to secure this long cargo bay.

1973 VOLVO 1800ES FOR SALE

The fuel injected B-series is fitted with a new EFI harness, fuel pump, fuel injectors, water pump, coil, engine/transmission mounts and a recently serviced radiator with an additional fan. Brake lines, hoses, shocks and numerous other suspension components are said to be new as well. The transmission is fitted with a rebuilt linkage and new neutral safety switch.

1973 VOLVO 1800ES FOR SALE

In an odd way the 1800ES could be considered the brand’s first crossover, and we wish more brands had taken up this odd sports-wagon idea. Automatic or not, this one looks really sharp.

$3200 Driver: 1973 Saab Sonett III

0

This 1973 Saab Sonett III is described as a driver, a relief when so many of theseare non-running projects. Though we spy some cosmetic needs, it looks better than most and even retains cool factory graphics over vibrant orange paint. Find it here on Craigslist in Beaverton, Oregon for $3,200. Special thanks to BaT reader Emanuel S. for this submission.

1973 SAAB Sonett

Stripped of its substantial impact bumpers, the car’s crisp lines are given a new lease on life. We see a little bit of hazing in the fiberglass and paintowork on the leading edge of the nose, but by and large the shell looks pretty good. Paint on the hood’s power bulge is showing its age, but the orange balance isn’t bad at all.

1973 SAAB Sonett

Soccer ball wheels can’t really be improved on, though these need their OEM contrasting black centers redone. An example of Jeep’s smallest offering, the Fiat-built Renegade, is seen parked in the background of the picture below and helps demonstrate just how small these little Swedish wedges are in person.

1973 SAAB Sonett

The interior appears to be in generally good condition, with no obvious tears in the upholstery. Despite the closed roof, the flat floor in these cars makes for a relatively roomy cabin. The 4-speed gearbox in Sonett IIIs utilizes a console mounted shifter rather than the balky column-mounted unit used in earlier cars.

1973 SAAB Sonett

Though said to be a driver, the ad is somewhat short on mechanical details. That said, with the large following and support these cars enjoy, keeping it a driver should prove a pretty straightforward process. Even if it needs another $3k in work over the next year or so, this one seems just about on the money, with Hagerty valuing a number 3 example close to $6k.

17K Mile RHD Creampuff : 1989 Volvo 760 GLE

This Volvo 760 GLE (VIN YV1764697K0071017) comes from the same seller who offered a heavily-optioned JDM Toyota Crown featured here recently, and may be a Japanese-market example as well. Known for their exceptional longevity, with just 17k miles on the clock this example is barely broken in. With just a few very minor blemishes shown, this one looks better than many new cars with similar mileage. Find it here on eBay in Apopka, Florida with a $14,500 BIN. Special thanks to BaT reader Support for this submission.

RHD Volvo 760 Lead

Extensively photographed, dozens of shots can be viewed from all angles in the seller’s Photobucket album. The attractive deep blue paintwork holds an excellent shine, and shows only some minor marring at the trailing edge of one of the doors and a pair of small stone chips. A few other marks can be seen on the plastic bumpers and one mirror cap, though overall the car presents beautifully.

RHD Volvo 760 Second

Though the radio needs a code, all other interior features are said to work as they should including A/C. Cloth upholstery and carpets both appear as new, and the broad, angular dash shows no cracking. The double-DIN head unit is a substantial factory item and suggests that this car is well optioned despite the cloth upholstery, consistent with a Japanese-delivered car.

interior

Compared to what we’re used to today, the engine bay looks like a tangled mass of vacuum lines and wires. Nevertheless, this is how the car would have appeared new in 1989. While the PRV V6 isn’t our first choice, it is still sufficiently potent and flexible for a car of this type. The transmission is said to shift like new, and tires are described as new Michelins.

The Volvo 760 epitomizes staid, reliable transportation and most of them are well past the 200k mark at this point. While it may not be a real ad, the headline “Boxy, But Good” certainly applies here.

One Owner Straight Six: 17K Mile 1975 Volvo 164E

This 1975 Volvo 164E (chassis VC16435B0151751) was purchased new by the seller before being garage parked in 1979, with minimal use since. A final model year example with just over 17k miles on the odometer, the seller says it still smells new. Recently, the car was pulled from storage and given attention in order to make it roadworthy, and is said to now start, run and drive like new. Find it here on eBay in Atascadero, California with no reserve.

Volvo Other 164E Electronic Fuel Injection | eBay

Burgundy paint appears to be very nice, with a deep shine over straight bodywork. Trim is intact and free of any pitting or fading that we can see, and glass is clear all around. OEM steel wheels exhibit the slightest bit of surface pitting, but that’s about the extent of nitpicks found on the exterior. Even the rubber bumper trim looks new. All five tires are claimed to be original, though we would change them out for safety’s sake.

Volvo Other 164E Electronic Fuel Injection | eBay

The beige interior plays well off the darker paint, and appointments are in good shape. Velour seats were redone up front and look very nice, a sunroof is optioned but is currently inoperable, and the A/C system is noted as needing a recharge. There are no missing pieces evident, the dash shows no cracking and all instruments are said to be functional. Sisal floor mats lend a nice period touch.

volvo3

The B30 fuel injected six cylinder has received a bit of work including new belts and hoses, water pump and a complete fuel system replacement among more detailed in the ad. New wheel cylinders, brake lines and master cylinder were also fitted, and all fluid systems were drained, flushed and refilled.

These scarce straight six cars are usually off the radar for even Volvo enthusiasts, and this is one of the best original examples we’ve seen.

One Owner 1985 Saab 900 5-Speed

$

0

This 1985 Saab 900 is a one-owner 5-speed model with just over 75k miles. Further described as rust-free, photos aren’t great and written information is minimal, but what we can see and read is promising. Find it here on Craigslist in Wheat Ridge, Colorado for $4,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Myles M. for this submission.

85 Saab 900

This dark blue is a nice color that we haven’t seen very often on 900s, and three door hatchbacks are our favorite bodystyle, tied with the five door models never exported to the US. Rubber bumpers and trim looks a bit faded, but paint seems nice and shiny with complete and nicely preserved trim. Simple OEM steel wheels with small hubcaps are a nice look, and though not doing much for the car’s appearance, the bra should at least have helped preserve the finish beneath.

85 Saab 900

The interior looks quite decent as well, with rip-free upholstery that’s showing some moderate staining on the driver’s outer bolster. The dash looks OK as well, but is almost certainly at least slightly cracked–finding a pre-GM 900 with a pristine dash is almost unheard of and has been for years.

85 Saab 900

The engine bay is a mess of vacuum and A/C lines, but that’s par for the course with these cars. Not a Turbo or 16V variant, the 5-speed means this one will still be fun to drive, especially as these cars handled very nicely regardless of what engine they ran. Note the weird back-to-front and slanted mounting of the Triumph-based four, which transmitted power down and back towards the transaxle via chain drive. Very weird, but that’s what makes old Saabs cool.

85 Saab 900

The ad also includes a photo of a complete and unused looking tool set, factory spare and jack in the trunk. These cars seem to be creeping up in value lately, and very few as nice as this one seems to be are left.

Spaceball 6-Speed: 2005 Volvo V70R AWD

$

0

This 2005 Volvo V70R wagon offers a five cylinder turbo coupled with AWD with a rare 6-speed manual. The 2.5 liter engine is rated at 296 HP and stopping power comes via a set of factory Brembo brakes. New, these were priced around $40k–well above their base models–and Volvo made the most of that extra money. Find it here on Craigslist for $7,950 in Alexandria, Virginia.

2005 Volvo V70R AWD 6-speed Wagon

A subtle rear spoiler, more aggressive bumpers and ‘R’-badged 17″ wheels are among the details that differentiate this model from the standard V70. A moonroof, fog lights and headlight wipers complete the exterior accessories. Nicely finished in Titanium Gray Metallic, this full-sized wagon should really fly under the radar. Minor dings and scratches are noted by the seller, although none seem too bad in photos.

2005 Volvo V70R AWD 6-speed Wagon

With room for seven people–including a rear-facing bench in the hatch for children–these are cars are big on practicality. Though not equipped with the polarizing, baseball-glove-orange “Atacama” interior, the cool “Spaceball” shift mechanism is a nice touch. Seats are showing their age but appear soft and without any serious damage, and the driver can select from three suspension settings.

2005 Volvo V70R AWD 6-speed Wagon

The higher-output turbo models are not known for their fuel economy, but they put out a lot of power and sound great. More power isn’t too difficult to attain, either. Combined with the proven Haldex Traction system, traction should be excellent, and a nice set of snow tires could make this Swedish machine a safe kid-hauler during winter.

2005 Volvo V70R AWD 6-speed Wagon

A recent mechanical refresh included new brake pads and rotors, clutch, suspension components and a timing belt. Full service records are available from the seller, and the car sounds ready to take you and lots of your stuff and/or friends wherever you need to be.

Daily Driven: $5K 1966 Volvo 122S

This 1966 Volvo 122S coupe has been restored over the past twelve years and now runs a rebuilt engine and transmission. Many other parts have also been replaced or rebuilt. Driven daily except during winter, it sounds like reliable fun, and though some cosmetic imperfections are noted, it is claimed to be rust-free. Find it here on Craigslist in Ithaca, New York for $5k. Special thanks to BaT reader Sam H. for this submission.

1966 Volvo 122s Amazon 2 door. Price lowered for winter!

Along with the windshield, stainless bumpers were replaced just last year. Fit on the front is slightly off but could hopefully be fixed with an adjustment–it also appears the right grille is in need of a similar fix. The seller mentions some orange peel in the decade-old respray, but we think it looks fine for a low-stress driver. Prior to paint, the front fenders were replaced and filler was applied to the left rear, but the car is claimed to be rust-free.

1966 Volvo 122s Amazon 2 door. Price lowered for winter!

Though not ideal from a visual standpoint, 1990s Honda Accord coupe seats are said to be very comfortable and supportive. Notably, their original power adjustments work. There’s no word on the rear seat which isn’t shown, but door panels seem to match nicely and it would appear that the cabin is otherwise largely stock, excluding relatively discreet door speakers and a Sunpro tach mounted on the column.

1966 Volvo 122s Amazon 2 door. Price lowered for winter!

Aside from some dirt in the corner next to the battery, this is a very clean engine bay and properly matched with the exterior. Both the B18 and 4-speed were rebuilt at some point during restoration, and the seller says the car gives little drama aside from normal old car stuff like routine carb tuning and the like.

1966 Volvo 122s Amazon 2 door. Price lowered for winter!

Those looking for an affordable, easy-to-fix classic should give an Amazon serious consideration. This one seems priced reasonably, and could be a great candidate for the job.

$1000 1959 Volvo PV544 Project

$

0

This 1959 Volvo PV544 is said to have a free-turning engine, but it sounds to have been sitting for some time. Rust is very likely to be an issue underneath, but at this price we’d be tempted to drive out an take a closer look anyway. Find it here on Craigslist in Raleigh, North Carolina for $1,000. Special thanks to BaT reader Jerry E. for this submission.

1959 Volvo PV544

The interior looks tired and dirty, but upholstery is apparently free of rips and is said to have been redone by the previous owner. No engine bay photos are provided, but the seller says that the previous owner drove the car regularly–when that last was is unknown, however.

1959 Volvo PV544

Sills seem to have had better days, but we’ve seen much worse restored. The seller says they had plans to turn it into a racer, and a vintage rally built might not be a bad idea–fix the rust, sort the mechanicals and don’t worry about missing trim.

Trollhattan Glory Days: 1990 Saab 900 SPG

$

0

This 1990 Saab 900 SPG (VIN YS3AL35L4L3001891) is a high mileage example with nearly 200k miles, but it sounds to be well cared for. SPG 900s are arguably the best looking and performing of all 900 variants, though the base trim Turbo seen in the background here is pretty tempting as well. Described as a rust-free California car with a strong engine, the SPG looks great in photos. Find it here on Craigslist in Lisbon, Maine for $14,450.

1990_Saab_900_SPG_001

In 1990, all 771 US-bound SPGs were finished in either red or black to go with their gray body cladding. Handsome Talladega Red paint, a mixture of original and resprayed portions, appears to have a nice shine across all panels. The rubber-tipped whale-tail spoiler, while larger than the one originally fitted to SPGs, is a Saab original part. The seller notes that European headlights equipped in photos are not included–US OEM units will instead take their place. We’ve said it before, but it still stands that Saabs are the only cars that look good with three spoke wheels–these ones are wrapped with new tires.

1990 Saab 900 SPG

The Buffalo Gray leather interior displays some wear consistent with an almost 200k mile car, but still shows well. Heated seats, working air conditioning and cruise control are all present. Although not completely shown in the photographs, the dashboard appears to be crack-free which would make it a very rare item. A power sunroof is also notable.

1990 Saab 900 SPG

Offering 15 more horsepower than standard, 160 HP 16V turbo 900s, these SPGs are quite torquey as well with just under 200 lb. ft. Further factory SPG tuning included lowered, stiffer suspension to improve handling performance. Claimed to be a California-sourced car, the seller says it’s rust-free, adding that it starts, idles and runs great. A head gasket replacement from 2008 is mentioned, as is a more recent brake fluid flush.

1990 Saab 900 SPG

Though this car has plenty of miles under its belt, it looks and sounds to be a good one. If you’ve been after an SPG, it could be worth a closer look–they aren’t making any more in Trollhattan.

783,041 Miles: All Original 1972 Volvo 1800E at No Reserve

This 1972 Volvo 1800E (chassis 182635A038241) is described as all-original and well-maintained by a long-term owner, but what really captured our attention is its casually mentioned mileage figure–783,041, repeated in the “item specifics” field precisely so we’re sure that it’s not a typo. Find it here on eBay in Clackamas, Oregon with no reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader David N. for this submission.

Volvo Other E | eBay

Just as claimed by the seller, Gold Metallic (code 105) is a somewhat rare color. Finish is described as all-original, along with the rest of the car. Sheet metal is straight, trim intact, and from what we can see, the car appears to be in quite good condition. If truly an all-original and nearly 800k mile example, then this level of preservation is extraordinary.

Volvo Other E | eBay

Dirty rubber mats aren’t helping sell it, but the interior appears to be in nice shape as well. We’d be surprised if those seats haven’t been recovered, but materials and patterning do look correct. It’d easy to suspect that the seller’s single, non-bold and/or plus size text “all-original” claim isn’t emphasized nearly enough to be 100% accurate, but then again the car’s incredible mileage is mentioned in a similarly offhand and understated way.

Volvo Other E | eBay

Said to run and drive excellently, virtually no other information is provided. The seller offers additional photos and history on request, though a low number of mixed transaction feedback could be reason for caution.

Volvo Other E | eBay

We’d love to know more about this one, and hope that its story is legit. If anyone discovers more, please share in the discussion.

One Extra Cylinder & Two Added Cycles: 1966 Saab Monte Carlo Project

$
0
0

This 1966 Saab 96 Monte Carlo 850 (chassis 374334) is a non-running project said to be free of serious rust issues. Many Saabs lived hard lives in harsh climates, and often project cars have serious deterioration under the skin. Though it lacks the trademark two-stroke in favor of a larger four-stroke V4 from a later car, this one’s nice interior and overall fair condition should make turning it into a driver pretty straightforward–a return to the correct oil-burning triple would be ideal of course. Find it here on eBay in Sheridan, Illinois with no reserve.

Saab 96 monte carlo lead crop

The car shows numerous pieces of broken or missing trim and some creased panels, but overall appears to be in quite decent condition. Though several items are not shown on the car, only a few pieces of chrome trim, one of the 850 badges and the left taillight are specifically noted as missing. Finish is partially a white primer to inhibit the spread of surface rust, the worst of which is said to be on the hood. The floors, subframes and body are noted as being solid and not in need of repair. The seller suspects a past fender bender, as the right front panel is a standard 96 item.

Saab 96 monte carlo second crop

Inside the car appears remarkably well preserved, with all original trim and switches apparently present. The upholstery is noted as original, and doesn’t look like it will need replacing. Some minor staining can be seen on the carpets, but nothing immediately off-putting.

Saab Other | eBay

Unfortunately, this car no longer sports its correct three cylinder two-stroke, instead being fitted with a V4 as used in later Saabs. While it may lack the rev-happy character of the earlier motor, the V4 is torquier and should be somewhat easier to drive in traffic. The Ford-sourced four also remains well supported by a healthy parts supply and relatively substantial aftermarket.

Saab Other | eBay

While not original, this project car is still nicer than most project Saabs, and should make an entertaining driver when put back together–especially once reunited with a popcorn-machine triple.

Sharp Silver 1967 Volvo 1800S

$

0

This 1967 Volvo 1800S is a good looking coupe with a claimed 66k and change miles. Said to run very well with no corrosion issues, the car retains its original black and yellow California license plates and is racking up the bids at a fast clip. Though it looks to have a slight copper tinge in the first photo, paint is actually a simple but very handsome pure silver. Find it here on eBay in Portland, Oregon with no reserve.

Volvo Other Coupe | eBay

Paint is said to be an older respray, but it appears to be holding up well thanks to long term storage. Bodywork seems to be straight with proper panel gaps and no glaring faults– we do spot a few dinged up trim pieces though. Most brightwork looks pretty good however, and the seller says that the car has no corrosion problems. There’s some interesting stuff parked in the background.

Volvo Other Coupe | eBay

The monochromatic interior looks hardly used, with very nice carpets and seats, the fronts of which have been recovered. Door panels are equally nice, and the dash pad seems to be in excellent shape. Wipers are the only item listed as inoperable, though the heater has not been tested. We would definitely try to source an OEM radio or a blanking plate to replace the plasticky cassette deck.

Volvo Other Coupe | eBay

The engine bay appears to be recently detailed. Said to run very well, the B18 four cylinder drives a smooth shifting overdrive manual, and the seller says that the car does quite well at highway speeds with tight suspension underneath. No recent maintenance is mentioned however.

Volvo Other Coupe | eBay

There isn’t a lot of detailed information contained in the ad, so a little investigating will be required for serious lookers. This quick first glance looks promising, though.

Swedish Trio: 1978 Saab 99 Turbo w/ Two Parts Cars & Spares

$

0

This 1978 Saab 99 Turbo (chassis 99781015848) was recently pulled from 32 years of storage, subsequently receiving considerable refurbishment work by its Saab factory trained tech seller. Two parts cars are included in the auction, as well as numerous other spares. The main focus of this piece is the finished black car, which the seller describes as “rock solid, fast, and wonderful to drive. The car is ready to drive anywhere, any distance.” Clear titles for all three are included as well. Find them here on eBay in Novelty, Ohio for $16,900 OBO.

Saab Other Turbo | eBay

Up front, a European market grille and headlights were added, as well as hood louvers to aid in extracting engine bay heat. The body appears to be straight with shiny paint, although imperfections include minor rust around the door seams, and stone chips that have been touched up. Cool factory Inca wheels have been sandblasted and shod with new rubber. They look great, especially teamed up with OEM mudflaps.

Saab Other Turbo | eBay

Listed mechanical work is extensive, with highlights including new TRW pistons, a rebuilt and modified head with double valve springs and polished ports, what sounds to be a performance camshaft, balanced rotating assembly, and a transmission overhaul. Koni adjustable shocks and sway bars from H&R tighten up the suspension. Be sure to check out the full ad for more info.

s-l1600

The interior presents as driver quality, with tired but fairly clean carpeting and aftermarket Recaro style seats that are in similar shape. A Fittipaldi steering wheel and VDO gauges have been fitted as well, though the rear seats remain stock burgundy upholstered items.

Saab Other Turbo | eBay

The first parts car mentioned is a 1978 99 Turbo that shows some rust in areas, but is described as being restorable by using parts from the second parts car, a 78 99 EMS with more extensive corrosion issues and an engine and transmission sourced from another 99 Turbo. Several boxes of spares are photographed as well, and the seller estimates that these parts are worth thousands of dollars on their own. Titles are available for all three cars.

Saab Other Turbo | eBay

After sorting the details on the first one, we’d get the second one running as a rally car or winter beater, especially given the extensive spares cache.

Two Door Finale: 1984 Volvo 242 GLT w/ IPD Upgrades

$
0
0

This 1984 Volvo 242 GLT (VIN YV1AX4725E2239094) is a nice looking driver sporting a long list of IPD performance upgrades, in addition to a recent respray in what looks like factory-offered medium blue. 1984 was the last year for the two-door brick, and good ones have been difficult to find for a while now. The seller says this one offers excellent handling and improved power, both of which are calling out for a manual transmission swap. Find it here on eBay in Dickerson, Maryland with reserve not met.

Volvo 240 GLT | eBay

The 240’s classic, boxy lines show well under new paint, and large expanses of sheet metal don’t seem to give away any noticeable flaws. The seller notes there were previous rust areas on the underside and rear of the car, but were remedied in preparation for respray. Yokohama tires appear to have plenty of tread remaining and are wrapped around good-looking ARE multi-spokes.

Volvo 240 GLT | eBay

The cabin looks to be in fairly good shape as well, with seats and door cloth being the only significantly worn areas. Carpeting is a bit dirty, but the dashboard and door panels show nicely with no broken or missing trim items, cracks, or sun fade noticeable in photos. A sunroof is equipped, but there is no word on the functionality of any electrical items.

Volvo 240 GLT | eBay

The B21 four cylinder now sports an upgraded camshaft and pulley, along with an intercooler kit all sourced from IPD and tuned to run 13 pounds of boost. Upgraded plug wires and a high output fuel pump are also listed, while suspension has received numerous improvements including springs, struts and shocks, larger sway bars, and strut braces. Front brakes have been cross drilled, and though the motor has over 127k miles logged, it could have plenty of life left even with the added boost–provided it’s maintained properly, of course.

Volvo 240 GLT | eBay

It’s almost a shame that a 242 with such a nice performance package is saddled with an automatic, and if we were buying, a proper 5-speed would definitely be on the menu.

No Reserve Runner: 1970 Saab 96 Project

$
0
0

This 1970 Saab 96 is said to start, run, and drive well, and looks like a decent driver despite some rust issues that are largely concentrated underneath. Still, the seller says that there are no large holes, and without directly seeing it from underneath on a lift, the car looks quite serviceable as-is. Find it here on eBay in Export, Pennsylvania with no reserve.

1970_Saab_96_01

The paint code plate shows that the resprayed Savannah Beige is the original color. Large portions of the chrome trim are pitted, but not bent or missing. The seller makes note of several rusty locations such as where the bumpers enter the body and around the doors. Below the door sills the finish is inconsistent and bumpy indicating the presence of corrosion and/or previous work. All lights and glass are accounted for which is a plus as these items become increasing difficult to source. Wheels show some light corrosion as well but shine for the most part. Overall panel fitment is good and the doors and trunk appear to close properly.

1970_Saab_96_02

The looks perfectly usable if not quite perfect, but still, we’ve seen far worse in other 96’s. Three-point seatbelts are found up front, and the headliner still looks quite good. The dashboard seems to be pretty nice as well, but houses a non-op speedo/odometer unit. Upholstery, door panels, headliner and switchgear all seem to be in fine shape.

1970_Saab_96_03

Power comes from a 1.5 liter Ford V4 which provides much more torque than its two-stroke predecessor. Twist is sent through a column-operated 4-speed which is said to shift smoothly. A carry-over feature from earlier models, the two-stroke protecting overrunning clutch is still present on this example and it’s said to engage well via the handle under the dash.

1970_Saab_96_04

Address the corrosion, pick up some soccer ball alloys and go practice your gravel stage skills.

Two 1969 Saab 96 Projects for $1K

These two 1969 Saab 95’s are offered for restoration, one a former runner that’s sat for about ten years and the other a parts car that’s been partially scavenged for parts to keep the other going. Said to have had no problems when parked, the previous runner is described as having “a little body rust”, but unfortunately photos are limited. Still, for this price it’s an intriguing restoration prospect. Find the pair here on Craigslist in Ojai, California for $1k.

Two 1969 Saabs

It doesn’t appear as if the parts car is photographed, meaning this green car must be the prior runner. A factory Ford V4-powered example, it’s said to have run with no particular problems before being parked about a decade ago, after which a dead battery and apparently little interest left it to weather under the Southern California sun. It does appear to be complete with good glass and most if not all trim, and though it’d be nice to have a clearer picture of the corrosion situation, its location does potentially bode well for structural health.

Two 1969 Saabs

No engine or interior shots are provided, and the seller insists that both be towed away and will not separate the pair. Early Saabs are fun in any form, whether two or four stroke, two door or wagon, but the latter are particularly unusual. Based on what can be seen, this one looks promising, especially for a short stack of $100 bills. Offer 500 cash and good luck.

This 1964 Saab Quantum IV (chassis 102) is an interesting, US-built open wheel racer originally sold in kit form. Quantum built some interesting road cars, and is noted for one of the first computer designed chassis, as engineered for the Quantum I in 1959. The seller claims that only 26 of this model are known to the marque registry, adding that this example has the lowest known chassis number. Powered by a Saab two-stroke triple, the seller says it was raced continuously from the mid-1990’s up until a few years ago. Find it here on eBay in Chicago, Illinois with reserve not met.

Described as previously restored by a Saab specialist, there’s no word on when work was completed. It looks like the car ran in VSCDA-sponsored events, though no logbooks or race history is noted. The photo below shows the car running in what appears to be much the same condition as above, though again no further info is provided by the seller.

Seeing as it’s been off-track for a few years, scrutineering is liable to require a few new safety items. The shift knob looks like it has a 4-speed with reverse pattern, which makes sense given the quoted Hewland Mk4 gearbox.

The seller also mentions a few dependability and safety upgrades including electronic ignition, a custom aluminum radiator and a six-gallon fuel cell. The engine is said to have been professionally rebuilt as well, though no date is given. Tires are fresh, the battery is new and clean gas is in the tank.

Looking through the VSCDA website, it’s unclear exactly what group this one would have run in, but Group 4 open wheelers would seem the most likely, even if none of the given classes sound like a perfect fit.

One of 10: 1946 Volvo PV60 L

This 1946 Volvo PV60 is one of 3,506 built between 1946 and 1950, the seller claiming this long-wheelbase L example to be even scarcer, with only 10 or so built as hotel shuttle service cars. Designed before WW2 and originally scheduled for a 1940 introduction, war postponed sales until the smoke had cleared, at which point the market for upscale, six-cylinder luxury models was understandably rather limited. Find this one here on Classic Trader in Koln, Germany for $29,289 USD. Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. for this submission.

a

As was once common practice for the company, the PV60 was modeled after contemporary American cars, both in styling and engineering, the robust and simple nature of the latter particularly well-suited to Sweden’s many remote, rough roads. The model bears a strong resemblance to the 1939 Pontiac lineup, particularly from the front, though standard wheelbase models were some four inches shorter than the Detroit company’s smallest offering. This handsome LWB model has a striking long-cab/short-nose side profile, and sounds to have been restored, the German language ad noting previous metal repair.

b

The interior is only shown from two angles, the one below and another dash closeup shot. What can be seen looks pretty good, with seemingly accurate seat and door trim panel upholstery, though the shag pile, cranberry-red carpets don’t seem to fit very well at all–neither literally nor from a style point of view. The big, Bakelite-rimmed steering wheel partially hides a column-mounted 3-speed manual shift, though no engine bay photos are provided. Power should come from a 3.7 liter, 90 HP L-head straight six, however.

c

The ad further notes all new brakes including master cylinder, pads and wheel cylinders, new tires, a fresh battery, a rebuilt (or new) carb, a new radiator and more. About 400 test kilometers have been added since completion, and the seller says it’s a pleasure to drive.

2400 Mile 1970 Saab 99

This 1970 Saab 99 is said to have had only one owner until recently and looks to be in very nice shape. What really impresses is the mileage though, quoted as just 2,349 from new and further said to be verifiable. Though recently resprayed, the car otherwise appears to be very original including the nicely-preserved interior. Find it here on Blocket in Vallentuna, Sweden for 89,500 SKR (~$10,500 USD today). Special thanks to BaT reader David P. for this submission.

The seller says that the car was just freshly resprayed in photos, and that any missing trim has since been re-applied. It’s a bit unfortunate that such a low-mileage survivor no longer retains its original paint, though we imagine it must have suffered pretty badly in storage if deemed necessary to erase so much factory history.

The upturned tail and funky greenhouse shape makes these cars especially interesting to look at from the back, and overall condition does look to be quite good here. Ditto the interior, which we gather remains original. These early 99’s are very simple inside, and it’s unusual to see one with such a nicely maintained cabin. No engine bay shots are provided unfortunately, but the seller does say that the car has no technical flaws, adding that it’s ready to go.

EMS and Turbo models are more sought-after, but clean, low-spec early examples are probably even scarcer today. This one looks pretty sharp, and even if it is probably too nice to convert for rally use, it would still be a lot of fun to flog in the snow.

Rare Early Coupe: 1971 Volvo 142E

This 1971 Volvo 142E is a first model year example of the relatively rare two door, and though cosmetics will need some attention, the seller says that it “starts, runs and drives great,” adding that the car cruises at 75 MPH with ease. Now wearing what looks to be faded late-70’s Volvo red-brown, body panels are said to be straight with good fit and only a few small dings. Find it here on eBay in Burlingame, California, with no reserve.

Glass and exterior brightwork all look to be in good shape, and though slotted steel wheels are model-correct, the 142E’s standard-equipment wheel trim rings are MIA. Aluminum bumpers and rub strips appear to be straight and unblemished, as does the three-piece grille, which was new for ’71. Lamps and lenses are all present and don’t appear to show any cracks.

Volvo Other 142E | eBay

Rear panel badges denote Volvo’s first use of electronic fuel injection (in this case Bosch D-Jetronic), as well as the presence of a 4-speed manual transmission with electric overdrive–also standard 142E equipment. The seller notes a dime-sized hole in the spare tire well, but adds that fenders, rockers, and floor pans are rust-free inside and out.

They go on to note that the car could benefit from “some sorting of the interior,” noting two cracks and a hole in the dash pad from a previously-mounted tach. Gauges and switchgear look to be original, and a period Blaupunkt AM/FM head unit plays through two dash speakers. The glovebox is gone, but the seller will include a replacement. Upholstery, including that on non-original front seats, needs some attention.

Underhood, the 130 HP B20E four-cylinder shows evidence of recent maintenance, including new fuel hoses, vacuum lines, temperature sensor, thermostat, and coil. A new power brake booster, battery, and alternator have also been fitted. Valves and timing have been adjusted, and  the M41 gearbox has also been rebuilt. Though not without its needs, this one sounds like a good candidate for a rolling restoration.
