Rare Two-Stroke Saab Racer: 1964 Quantum IV Formula S

This 1964 Quantum IV Saab Formula S racer is one of about 50 built over a short two or three-year span, and reportedly remains a lot of originality including the tubed tires. Sold as kits to which a buyer would fit Saab 96 suspension and drivetrain components, Quantums were two-stroke triple powered and this example reportedly retains very good mechanicals. Condition loos outstanding throughout, and spec includes  many obsolete details like a fuel-filled frame and three-point belt–considering how much modification would be required for it to race again, the car might be best preserved as-is, though of course we’d love to see it on track as well. Find it here on eBay in Beverly Hills, Florida with a $10k starting bid and no further reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader Jerry W. for this submission. The car sounds to have originally belonged to a local Maine-based Saab dealer and racer whom the current owner admired as a young boy. Though its believed to have been raced only once in 1965 SCCA Formula C, the car does show a small portion of cosmetic repair just ahead of the right rear wheel low on the fiberglass body–it’s otherwise believed to remain all original, and the seller admits that gelcoat isn’t quite as shiny as it appears here when viewed in person. From the ad: “The car was completely disassembled and the chassis fully restored in 2011 as accurately as possible to the specifications as built when new in 1964. The chassis still retains the original gasoline in the frame setup, which became obsolete in SCCA within a year or two of the car’s introduction. It also has the original three-point seat belt/shoulder harness mounting points, which also quickly became obsolete in SCCA.” The original owner retained the car until their passing in 2010, and the seller acquired it from their estate the following year. Look at the size of that expansion pipe–we’d love to hear the two-stroke triple really opened up through the gears. Again from the ad: “The engine runs well, and the clutch and gearbox also work as new. The engine is built to the original Formula S specifications and retains the single carburetor setup as was required by the rules for the class. All photos are current, except for the last photo which came from the included scrapbook and it shows the car as first assembled back in the mid-1960’s.” Sale includes a spare engine block, as well as another set of wheels with more modern, tubeless Dunop racing rubber among other, unspecified extra parts. As the seller points out, the car would need extensive modification to be raced again, but regardless of its fate we’re simply pleased to see such an unusual and interesting racer preserved in this kind of condition.
