1984 Volvo 242 Group A Tribute

$

0

This 1984 Volvo 242 has been built into a good looking Group A racer replica, and though offered with minimal information the seller does include a link to a restoration/build gallery that provides a few clues. Running what appears to be a B234 16 valver with a sizable turbo, it should have more than enough power to match the look. Find it here on Craigslist in Acworth, Georgia for $15k including unspecified spares and $5k less without. Special thanks to BaT reader Todd S. for this submission, who also says that this same seller was the one who built the turbo wagon we featured here.

$2500 Basketcase: 1967 Volvo 123GT

$

0

This 1967 Volvo 123 is said to be an authentic, factory-built GT model. Rusty, incomplete and in need of full restoration, the seller adds that some GT-specific parts are missing–it’s clear that many other, less specialized items are absent as well. Find it here on Craigslist in Carisle, Pennsylvania for $2,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Gary Y. for this submission.

1967 Volvo 123 GT

Though a headlight bucket remains in place, the entire right front fender is missing. Additionally, several pieces of glass including the windshield are absent and rust is visible on fenders, lower trunk panel and elsewhere.

1967 Volvo 123 GT

Here’s a shot of the passenger side and the structure beneath its missing front fender. No interior or engine bay photos are provided.

1967 Volvo 123 GT

Standard production, non-GT parts should be easy enough to come by, but rust and model-specific trim will likely prove to be much bigger hurdles.

Sixteen Inches Ground Clearance: 1975 Volvo C303

$

0

This 1975 Volvo TGB11/C303 is said to be in very good running order, the seller adding that in 30 years of off-roading it’s most capable climber they’ve ever encountered. Power comes form the truck’s original three liter B30 straight six, and thanks in large part to portal axles, ground clearance is an impressive 16″ under the differentials. Find it here on Government Liquidation in Auburn, California with an unmet $25 starting bid and additional reserve.

1975 Volvo C303 - Government Liquidation

Here’s the front left portal axle. Goodyear MTR tires are said to remain in good condition and electrical power comes from two new yellow-top Optima batteries.

Though mechanicals are robust and straightforward, the included full set of technical manuals is a nice bonus nonetheless.

BaT Auction Success Story: A Happy Volvo Coupe Buyer

This just in from the buyer of the 1968 Volvo P1800S Coupe that sold here as a BaT Auction three weeks ago (link):

“My thanks to all that participate in BaT. This was my first auction and I was quite pleased with the experience. Plus I think I may have a new addiction. The pictures did not fully represent the quality of the car. In fact the car presents better in reality than the photos. I can’t wait to spend some serious time driving it. My thanks to the seller and all the helpful comments.

Rusty Rockers: 1969 Saab Sonett II Project

$
0
0

This 1969 Saab Sonett II is largely complete including its original, free-turning Ford-made V4 engine, however rockers seem to have turned to dust long ago and the floors are somewhat rusty, too. Fiberglass looks a bit better though, and provided you’re handy with a welder the car might not be beyond saving. Find it here on Hemmings in Slatersville Rhode Island for $2,800 firm.

1969 Saab Sonett Front

The ad mentions a hole in the engine lid’s power bulge, clearly seen dead-center in the photo above. Though not pictured here, all four OEM hubcaps are included and glass looks salvageable except for the cracked rear window.

1969 Saab Sonett Rear

The interior looks pretty good and is missing only an air vent, though carpets will need replacement and seats a cleaning at the minimum. Suspension pick up points sound to be OK, and the seller says the car would probably hold up well to being towed rear end-down on a two-wheel dolly.

Bertone Coupe: 30k Mile Volvo 780 GLE

$
0
0

This 1987 Volvo 780 GLE (VIN YV1HA6920HD002272) is one of about 8,500 built between 1986 and 1990, very few of which remain on the road. These Bertone-styled coupes have aged very nicely, and this example is said to be all original, rust-free and in excellent condition with 30k and change miles from new. Find it here on eBay in Canton, Georgia with a  $10,890 BIN.

Bertone Coupe: 30k-Mile Volvo GLE

Based on the standard 700-series of sedans and wagons, Bertone gave the two door slightly lower bodywork and a re-shaped C-pillar. This one’s said to remain completely original including paint, and several decent quality photos do show what appears to be a very well-kept car with a minimum of visual flaws.

$_4 (3)

From the rear especially, there’s a strong Maserati Biturbo look. The seller says this model retailed for $34k in 1987–nearly $73,000 in today’s money. Note the Bertone badges at the base of either side’s C-pillar.

$_4 (2)

The interior presents beautifully with excellent leather, carpets, wood, vinyl and headliner. A double DIN OEM cassette deck/graphic equalizer, big analog clock and some of the comfiest seats we’ve ever experience are a few highlights. We’re not sure if it was standard, but we’ve never seen a 780 without a sliding steel sunroof.

$_4 (1)

The PRV V6 isn’t that most charismatic or powerful motor, but they’re tough and easy to work on with good parts availability. If anything, the 150 HP and automatic trans ensures this one will be driven properly–slow, steady and smooth.

Incas & Louvers: 1978 Saab 99 Turbo

$
0
0

This 1978 Saab 99 Turbo (chassis 99781026499) looks great and sounds to be a nice driver, too. The seller details a long list of recent mechanical work, adding that the car runs reliably over long distances. We love a good 900 Turbo, but these 99’s are the coolest. Find this one here on eBay in Palm Court, Florida with no reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader Dan C. for this submission.

1978 Saab 99 Turbo Front

Inca wheels, SAAB TURBO side graphics (note the stylized impeller “O”), metal rear louvers and the factory air dam all combine to give the car a chunky, aggressive, all-business look that we really dig. Paint is imperfect and surface rust is present, but overall cosmetics are quite nice and the seller says the car exhibits no rust-through.

1978 Saab 99 Turbo

Check out the stencil-patterned SAAB logos on either side of the rear louvers–rad. The interior is holding up quite well also, and though HVAC controls are binding and will need work, all gauges and lights are said to work and both the dash top and funky velour upholstery are still in nice shape. The sunroof works as well, and the new headliner looks pretty good.

1978 Saab 99 Turbo Interior

Recent or at least semi-recent work included fitment of a new clutch, brake booster, starter, thermostat, cooling fan temperature switch, alternator, belts, ignition lock, 02 sensor, exhaust, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, battery and quite a bit more detailed in the ad.

1978 Saab 99 Turbo

Sale includes two shop manuals, owner’s manual, replacement HVAC controls and linkage, various dash/center console parts including an original radio, various gaskets, O-rings, relays, bearings and more. This one looks like a ton of character and fun for the cash.

IPD Everything: Upgraded 1990 Volvo 240 Turbo 5-Speed Wagon

$
0
0

This 1990 Volvo 240 Turbo wagon spent most of its 208k miles as an automatic equipped car, but now runs a World Class T-5 5-speed and an upgraded and rebuilt 1993 B230F Volvo motor. Overall the car sounds to be in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, and the seller adds that it’s 100% free of rust as well. Find it here on Craigslist in Franklin, North Carolina for $5k. Special thanks to BaT reader George B. for this submission.

1990 Volvo 240 Turbo 5-speed Wagon

Lowered via IPD springs, the car looks great sitting over OEM Volvo basketweaves. Paint is described as either an 8 or 9 out of ten while bodywork is said to show very few small dents.

1990 Volvo 240 Turbo 5-speed Wagon

Other details include IPD sway bars, Bilstein HD shocks, new water pump, timing belt, radiator, thermostat and much more detailed at length in the ad. Additionally, the seller vouches for the car’s reliability by offering to deliver it anywhere in the continental US for $0.50 per mile.

No Reserve: 1967 Volvo 123GT Project

$
0
0

This 1967 Volvo 123GT (chassis 51455324) is a Canadian made is said to be substantially complete, missing only some minor trim. Though not without rust the car deserves to be restored, as these GT’s were made in relatively small numbers and have quite a bit of racing heritage, too. Find this one here on eBay in Glencoe, Ontario, Canada with no reserve and three digit bidding. Special thanks to BaT reader Patrick G. for this submission.

1967 Volvo 123GT

Though not known for sure, the seller assumes that green paint and tan interior are both original. Rust is clearly an issue, but to what extent isn’t quite clear unfortunately–like all things, it’d be wise to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

1967 Volvo 123GT

Weirdly, the tach is said to have been vandalized–who would pick on an innocent rev counter? Note the GT-correct three spoke steering wheel and Recaro-made seat recliners. Though listed as a salvage due to a lack of title, the seller insists that this is only due to eBay regulations and that the car is not actually salvaged.

1967 Volvo 123GT

The motor is said to have turned freely when put into storage an unspecified length of time ago, but is now stuck. The seller suggests that a 50/50 blend of acetone and hydraulic fluid might be useful in freeing it up. An LSD-equipped car, these are a bunch of fun to hustle when properly dialed-in.

1967 Volvo 123GT

With bidding sitting at just $200 at the time of writing, it’s going to be interesting to see what it eventually changes hands for. Regardless, purchase price will be only the beginning of a long list of expenses, but the reward of a freshly restored 123GT will be worth the trouble.

One Owner: Concours Winning 1982 Volvo 242 DL

$
0
0

This 1982 Volvo 240 DL (VIN YV1AX4128C3214822) is on offer by its original owner who describes it as a 97.3 point, concours-winning and former VCOA magazine cover car. Further described as largely original and mechanically healthy, the car does look excellent in photos, especially for its near-140k miles. Find it here on eBay in Keswick, Ontario, Canada with an $8k BIN. Special thanks to BaT reader Quanah for this submission.

1982 Volvo 240DL 2-Door

These two door 240’s were never as popular as sedans and wagons when new, but still seem to be disappearing at a faster rate than other variants. This presumably recent car show photo is a real slice of nostalgia, with equally impressive looking 70’s and 80’s machines covering most of the lawn.

1982 Volvo 240DL 2-Door

Tires have less than 200 miles and the seller adds that all systems including the engine, manual transmission, brakes and electrics are performing like new thanks to careful, routine maintenance. Paint, interior and mechanicals are listed as “70% original”, however no further details are provided.

1982 Volvo 240DL 2-Door

Sale includes what’s referred to as a vast collection of NOS parts worth $2,000 alone. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and some clean microfiber cloths in the trunk.

No Reserve: Ex-Targa Newfoundland 1970 Volvo 142 GT

$
0
0

This RHD Volvo 142 GT (chassis 1423342T162670) is claimed by the seller to have been entered in previous Targa Newfoundland rallies and is offered along with a parts car as well as additional spare parts. Said to want for nothing and handle wonderfully, these cars can make fantastic rally machines and we like this one’s simple, unpretentious driver vibe. Find it here on eBay in Glencoe, Ontario, Canada with no reserve and bidding below $1k with 35 hours left to bid at the time of writing.

No Reserve: Targa Newfoundland 1970 Volvo 142 GT

Featuring a welded-in roll cage, a Terratrip rally computer and seats with harnesses (now outdated for use in sanctioned events) the car is claimed to be rust-free, and photos seem to show a surprisingly straight body for a car that has been driven in hard competition from time-to-time.

No Reserve: Targa Newfoundland 1970 Volvo 142 GT

Later-model Volvo “Virgo” five-spoke alloys have replaced the OEM steelies, and the exterior shots seem to depict different stages in the 142’s white-and-blue livery. Partially decoding the VIN, this 142 was factory-equipped with Volvo’s “red block” B20B four-cylinder engine mated to an M40 four-speed manual gearbox. No information is provided on any drivetrain mods that may have been performed since then, however.

No Reserve: Targa Newfoundland 1970 Volvo 142 GT

The interior shot shows a thick-rim aftermarket steering wheel and a period Volvo accessory GT instrument cluster that has given up some of its original gauges. A dead pedal also appears to have been fabricated, and a portion of the roll cage is visible. Although Volvo built production 142 GT’s for the Canadian market, they were never offered in the U.S. Enthusiastic stateside customers could build their own versions using readily-available parts from Volvo Competition Service.

No Reserve: Targa Newfoundland 1970 Volvo 142 GT

This 142’s business-like interior shows a pair of Austrian Velo racing seats and unidentified harnesses. Although we might wish for a few more details on the build, we’d keep the referenced parts car for spares, add some auxiliary lighting and head for the nearest vintage sports car rally in this example.

Lots of Red: Restored 1964 Volvo PV544

$
0
0

This 1964 Volvo 544 Sport was restored by a previous owner and represents the penultimate year of production for these cars. Interestingly, model history includes Tom Trana’s win in the European Rally Championship the same year this example was built. No drivetrain details are given, but ’64 544’s ran 1.8 liter, 90 HP B18 four cylinders and 4-speed manual gearboxes. Find this one here on eBay in Portland, Oregon with a $12,500 BIN.

Volvo 544 Sport

Finished in #46 solid red, the car presents well in the available photos. Exterior trim looks to be complete and unblemished, and paintwork appears to be well-done with no obvious defects. The car retains its original hub caps and accessory locking gas cap and tires are said to be in good condition. Notably, this example doesn’t exhibit the drooping outside door handles that can often afflict this model after five decades or more, and the seller notes that bodywork and paint are documented in receipts totaling $14k.

Volvo 544 Sport

The interior looks to be well-finished, with a replacement dash pad and hard-to-source rubber floor mats. A period-correct Bendix-made Volvo AM radio is fitted, although an aftermarket wrap hides the steering wheel rim, and the original-equipment horn ring appears to be slightly pitted. The chain hanging down from the instrument panel operates a radiator blind, used for quicker cold-weather warmups.

Volvo 544 Sport

Lights, heater, fan, wipers, horn, and radio are all said to be functioning well and the red and white upholstery looks to be factory-correct for this model year. The three-point seatbelts, first offered by Volvo in 1959, are also seen in this shot. Although channeling the styling of late-40’s Fords, the 544 was the model that built the Swedish brand’s reputation for durability, also achieving quite a bit of success in competition as briefly noted above.

1973 Volvo 1800ES 4-Speed

$
0
0

This 1973 Volvo 1800ES is a last model-year example of the 1800’s final sportwagon permutation. Just over 8,000 ES models were built during the car’s two-year production run. Equipped with a 4-speed overdrive gearbox and functioning A/C, this one has been with its current fourth owner since 2003. Find it here on eBay in Van Nuys, California with no reserve. Special thanks to BaT reader David B. for this submission.

1973 Volvo 1800ES 4-Speed

Paintwork (OEM #46 Red) was applied three weeks ago according to the seller, and shows very well. Bumpers and trim moldings also look to be in fine shape, with no dents or pitting. This rear three-quarter view shows the ES’s iconic frameless rear glass to best advantage. In addition to the recent repaint, the seller notes a new windshield, muffler and battery. With just over 60k claimed original miles, the seller has retained all of the car’s records going back to the purchase by its first owner in Oklahoma.

1973 Volvo 1800ES 4-Speed

The crack-free instrument panel, front seats with mileage-appropriate patina, straight door cards, and slightly faded carpeting lend credence to the seller’s “original interior” claim. The protective plastic ring surrounding the emergency brake release–an oft-broken item–remains in place. Aside from a slow-running clock, all other systems are said to work as intended.

1973 Volvo 1800ES 4-Speed

The car runs a “red block” 130 HP B20F four-cylinder. A stock engine compartment features a now-rare finned aluminum accessory valve cover. The seller will include an original Bosch fuel injection analyzer, as well as additional spare parts and reference materials with the car.

1973 Volvo 1800ES 4-Speed

Overall, the car appears to be a well cared for example that needs only a new owner. Hagerty’s “Condition 2″ current valuation for this ’73 model is $20,700.

US Headlights in Sweden: Nicely Restored 1979 Volvo 242GT

$
0
0

This 1979 Volvo 242GT has been fully restored to what looks like an excellent standard, the seller further claiming it to be one of only 400 Swedish market examples of the two door, GT trim level. Our browser’s Swedish language translation skills are OK at best, but from we gather restoration used only OEM and high-quality aftermarket parts. Find it here on Blocket.se in Västernorrland, Sweden for 175k SEK (~$20,200 USD today).

42647379361-620x464

This car has been fitted with quad square US spec headlights and grille in place of the standard Euro market front end, amusingly reversing the popular trend on this side of the Atlantic. OEM Volvo Polaris wheels wear 215/45/17 rubber, and overall the car looks fantastic. Bodywork is said to be “stainless steel”, though in this context we think that the seller is saying that it’s free of rust and bubbling. Check out those stripes–too cool.

4284168546

The interior looks just as fresh and wears all new, factory-style upholstery and a good-looking aftermarket wheel with rally type dead-ahead marker at the 12 O’clock position of its suede rim.

4229064969

Motor details are either lacking or so awkwardly translated as to be indescribable. That said, the engine bay looks just as sanitary as the rest of the build, lending further credibility to the seller’s claim that the car is “as good as new if not better in some regards”.

4205774840

No big power turbo swap, no full rally spec cage or gravel stage prep and no detail overlooked, apparently. We dig it, even the US DOT touches.

All Troll No GM: 1993 Saab 900 5-Speed

$
0
0

This 1993 Saab 900 is a very well kept example of the last year of classic, pre-GM production. Featuring the excellent SAAB 16 valve four cylinder literally stacked atop a 5-speed manual, this car promises good performance wrapped in an odd if slightly staid looking package. Of course we wish it was a three door (or even better the European market five door), but three pedals and nicely preserved cosmetics are definitely pluses for this one. Find it here on Auto Trader Classics in Maywood, New Jersey for $4,500.

1993 Saab 900

900’s tend to rust from the outside in, and the first areas to go are usually the front fender lips which appear to be in great shape on this car. It’s fairly unusual to find such a base-spec car in this nice of condition, and with this car’s beige paint and poverty spec plastic hub caps it’s easy to mistake for just another normally aspirated automatic.

1993 Saab 900

The base level, non-leather seats are a rare site, particularly as well preserved as those fitted to this example seem to be. Door cards, carpets and other trim looks to be in equally nice shape, though the dash is heavily cracked–nearly unavoidable on these cars, even for garaged East Coast examples.

1993 Saab 900

The 136 HP,2.1 looks exceptionally clean, with none of the peeling cam cover paint that’s frequently seen on many old 900’s. These so-called H-series motors are notoriously long lived (much longer lived than the Triumph four they’re losely based on), and if maintained well this one’s 137k miles shouldn’t be a big deal.

1993 Saab 900

It’s hard to imagine someone buying a new 900 in 1993, by which point the model was fourteen years old and competing with cars two whole generations newer than it–the new E36 3 series, for example. 22 years later and their idiosyncrasies are now charming character traits instead of signs of obsolescence. We miss you, Saab.

Coachbuilt Duett Pick-Up: 1959 Volvo PV445

$
0
0

This 1959 Volvo PV445 (chassis 27116) sounds to have been converted to a pick-up when still new, a job performed by several Swedish coachbuilders including Valbo and Nordbergs. Recently refurbished with what’s minimally described as new bodywork and paint, the truck runs an upgraded B20 and 4-speed in place of its original B18 and looks pretty nice in photos. Find it here on eBay in Fountain Valley, California with no reserve beyond an unmet $18,500 opening bid. Special thanks to BaT reader Ken L. for this submission.

1959 Volvo PV445 Front

Unfortunately, all photos are vertically oriented and many are cropped poorly as well. From what we can make out paint and bodywork both look to be good, though there’s no word on filler, rust repair or any other potentially helpful specifics. We like the dark blue and wooden side strakes, though neither the diamond plate bed floor nor overly modern foglights in front are ideal.

1959 Volvo PV445 Rear

Other recent work included fitment of a new alternator (12V converted), a new battery, weatherstripping, brakes, tires and exhaust. A rarely seen Duett variant, we almost wish it was a bit scruffier so it could be put to proper work–ideally as a parts runner for a vintage Swedish shop.

Early Jensen Body: 1962 Volvo P1800

$
0
0

This 1962 Volvo P1800 Coupe is one of the early production Jensen bodied cars, and is claimed to be a black plate, rust free California original. Although total production numbers of the P1800 coupe stands at almost 40,000 units, only 6,000 of these Jensen constructed cars were delivered before Volvo began in-house operations in 1964, making them far harder to come by. Find this one here on Craigslist in Thousand Oaks, California for $19,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Tirefriar for this submission.

.

It’s not specified whether the paint is a re-do or not, only that it is the stock color, and in the photos it shows well with no visual cues of mistreatment or major neglect. Body panels appear straight and undamaged, and the windshield is noted as a NOS piece. All other glass is original, and the seller has also performed a full weatherstripping replacement. Brightwork shines well, and new tires have recently been fitted to the good looking early model steel wheels. Another cool touch to these earlier cars is the Volvo shield badge on the rearmost pillar.

image 1

The seller claims the interior to be all original materials, which if true means the car has led a pampered life. The seats look amazing well-preserved, along with great looking door cards, instrumentation, and carpeting that appears to be hardly worn. It’s not mentioned in the ad, but sadly, it appears an aftermarket sunroof was installed at some point, and hopefully it was done well enough to prevent water intrusion. These cars present a cleaner dash than the later, faux wood models, and this particular car’s red interior scheme looks great against the dark grey exterior.

The 100 HP B18 looks to be well cared for and is said to run strong. These 4-speed cars weighed in at just a touch over 2,0000 pounds in stock trim, and as a result are fun to drive despite the small displacement motor.

There are no undercarriage photos provided, so a request for those along with additional close ups of the exterior and some detailed information would be a logical step towards making a purchase, but from the initial advertisement, this one looks to be a strong and well sorted contender.

5-Speed Swapped: 1996 Volvo 850 R Wagon

$
0
0

This 1996 Volvo 850 R wagon (VIN YV1LW5821T2251630) sounds to be in excellent condition and runs a swapped-in manual transmission that was never offered on US market examples. Built by who’s described as a knowledgeable Volvo enthusiast, the car benefits from a long list of recent maintenance including a new timing belt, water pump, A/C condensor and more. Find it here on eBay in Houston, Texas with a $9k BIN.

Volvo 850 R Wagon 4 Door | eBay

Said to have no detectable dings or dents, the seller adds that paint is very nearly as nice with only minimal, light scratching on the driver’s door. These 850 wagons are great looking boxes and remind us of when Volvo ran a similar car in the BTCC during the mid 90’s.

Volvo 850 R Wagon 4 Door | eBay

Unfortunately, photos don’t match the quality of the car they depict, but the interior does look to be in nice shape with good part leather, part alcantara OEM R seats, an uncracked dash, clean luggage compartment and of course the manual gearshift sticking out of the center console.

Volvo 850 R Wagon 4 Door | eBay

Volvo’s turbocharged 2.3 makes a fantastic noise, all warbly, gruff and unmistakably five cylinder in origin. Performance upgrades on this one include Koni/Eibach suspension, a C70 chassis brace, 3″ downpipe, custom, catless 3″ midpipe and more. Recent maintenance included new Continental DWS tires, control arms, sway bar end links, front and rear cam seals, motor mounts, cooling system hoses, cam sensor and much more listed in detail in the ad.

Volvo 850 R Wagon 4 Door | eBay

We really want to ad this one to the family fleet, but no space means we’ll have to leave the opportunity to another lucky individual. If that’s you please drop us a line and let us live vicariously for a moment or two.

Restored Panorama: 1961 Scania B55-53V 35 Passenger Bus

$

0

This 1961 Scania B55-53V is an eight passenger bus said to have been restored eight years ago. Further described as being in good running condition, its panoramic windowed interior hold 35 passengers and looks to be in fantastic shape–just like the exterior. Find it here on prewarcar.com somewhere in Denmark for 55k euros (~$60,275 today). Special thanks to BaT reader Kyle K. for this submission.

1961 SCANIA B55-53 Front

We’re unable to find any solid information on this model, but research does show that it appears to have been offered in a variety of lengths and trim levels, many of which did not include this one’s super-cool panoramic windows. Condition looks excellent throughout, and though we’re not sure what practical purpose a vintage bus serves, we’re glad that dedicated enthusiasts are willing to part with time and money to bring them back to sparkling life.
